● What makes it different

Self drive desert safari, the rules are different.

Same Lehbab dunes, same DET-licensed convoy lead, same camp. Different driver — you. Four reasons self-drive is the choice for guests who'd rather feel the wheel than ride shotgun.

01

You drive · we guide

Lead vehicle in front, convoy of up to 6 cars behind. Briefing in English, Arabic, Russian, or French. Radio stays open. If you get bogged, we pull you out.

Safety briefed
02

Half the price, same camp

From AED 35 vs AED 79 for a pickup safari. All three tiers end at our Lehbab Bedouin camp — the same one our chauffeured evening guests visit. Premium adds extended dunes + priority seating. VIP adds falcon photo + shisha lounge.

From AED 35/pp
03

No tour bus, no schedule lock

Set your own pace within the convoy. Stop for photos when you want. Cancel free up to 24h before. You're driving your day — not herding 30 strangers in a 4×4.

The convoy lead messages you the night before with meeting point, recommended tire pressure, dress code, and what to bring. English, Arabic, Russian, French.

● Self drive day · stop by stop

Your self drive safari, hour by hour.

Mapped from five years of running self-drive convoys in Lehbab. Times shift ±20 minutes by season — your convoy lead WhatsApps exact times the day before. Below is a Premium-tier day.

  1. 3:30 PM · 01

    Meet at Lehbab convoy point

Roll up 30 minutes before sunset. Park, sign your waiver, pick up your radio. Tire pressure check by the lead driver — we drop them to around 18 PSI for dune flotation.

  2. 4:00 PM · 02

    Convoy briefing in person

Lead walks through dune patterns, hand signals, radio protocol, what to do if you bog (stay calm, don't gun it, wait for us). 15 minutes. Then we're moving.

  3. 4:30 PM · 03

    Drive into the dunes

Follow the lead vehicle, stay within 50 metres. Pace is your call within reason — overtake the convoy and we radio you back. First-timers find their rhythm in 10 minutes.

  4. 5:30 PM · 04

Sunset photo stop · golden hour

Lead picks a high dune, parks the convoy in a horseshoe, gives 30 minutes for golden hour photos. Best shots of the day — bring your camera, charge your phone.

  5. 6:30 PM · 05

    Arrive at Bedouin camp

Lehbab camp — same one our chauffeured evening safaris use. Park your 4×4, walk in, Arabic coffee + dates welcome. All three tiers stay for the full evening — what differs is dune time, seating, and BBQ menu.

  6. 7:30 PM · 06

    BBQ buffet + cultural shows

Open buffet — grilled meats, veg options, salads, Arabic mezze, dessert. Tanura, belly dance, fire shows during dinner. Most guests home by 9:30 PM.

Self drive safari, the questions guests actually ask.

Straight answers — the kind we'd give a friend who's never driven in the desert before.

01What is a self drive desert safari in Dubai? +
A self drive desert safari is a guided convoy where you drive your own 4×4 into the Lehbab dunes instead of being chauffeured. A DDV-licensed lead vehicle goes in front, you follow within radio range. You get the dune-bashing thrill of a regular evening safari — except you're the one behind the wheel. Pricing starts at AED 35/person, roughly half what a chauffeured pickup safari costs.
02Do I need a 4×4 to do a self drive desert safari? +
Yes — a real 4×4 with low-range or proper off-road mode is required. Sedans, crossovers, and "soft" SUVs without low-range can't handle Lehbab's dune patterns and will bog within minutes. If you don't own a 4×4, we can recommend rental partners — message us on WhatsApp for current options and pricing.
03How much does a self drive desert safari cost in Dubai? +
Our self drive packages run AED 35 to AED 75 per person. Standard (photo stop only) is AED 35, Premium (with BBQ camp) is AED 60, VIP (premium camp + falcon + double shows) is AED 75. Compare that to chauffeured evening safaris starting at AED 79 — self drive is the cheapest legal way to get on the Lehbab dunes.
04Is it safe to drive in the desert as a tourist? +
Yes — with a guided convoy, it's about as safe as off-road driving gets. The lead driver picks the route, sets the pace, and pulls you out if you bog. Convoy radio stays open the whole time. We've run 5+ years of self drive convoys without a serious incident. Solo unguided driving in the dunes is a different matter — that's where tourists actually get into trouble.
05What licence do I need to drive in Dubai? +
UAE residents: a valid UAE driving licence. Tourists: an International Driving Permit (IDP) plus your home country licence, or a licence from a country whose driving licences UAE recognises for direct conversion (varies — check Dubai RTA's list). Bring physical copies to the meeting point — we verify before the drive.
06Can I rent a 4×4 just for the safari? +
Yes — several Dubai rental agencies offer 4×4s suitable for desert driving (most commonly Toyota Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrols, or similar). Rentals run roughly AED 350–600/day depending on the vehicle. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll share current recommendations from partners we've worked with. We don't take rental commissions — we just want you in a vehicle that won't get stuck.
07What's included in the self drive package? +
All three tiers run the same 6-7 hour evening — convoy briefing, Lehbab dunes, sunset photo stop, Bedouin camp with BBQ buffet, 3 live shows (Tanoura, belly dance, fire), henna, and unlimited drinks. Premium adds extended 70-75 min dune route, priority majlis seating, premium BBQ with live cooking. VIP adds falcon photo session and shisha lounge access on top of Premium. Not the same as Evening VIP (AED 299) — that's a separate luxury product with private setup.
08How long does a self drive desert safari take? +
Standard: about 3 hours total (meet at 3:30 PM, home by 7 PM). Premium: 4–5 hours including camp dinner (home by 9:30 PM). VIP: 5–6 hours (home by 10 PM). All start ~30 minutes before sunset and time the dune driving for golden hour. Your convoy lead confirms exact times the night before.
09Can I bring kids in the 4×4? +
Yes — kids age 4 and above can ride along with proper seat-belted seating. The dune-bashing on a self drive convoy is gentler than a chauffeured tour (you control the pace), so it tends to be more comfortable for younger or motion-sensitive guests. Kids under 4 we don't recommend — the unpredictable terrain isn't worth the risk.
10What if I get stuck in the dunes? +
It happens to first-timers — stay calm, don't keep gunning the throttle (digs you in deeper), and radio the convoy. The lead vehicle reverses to your position, hooks up a tow strap, and pulls you out in 2–5 minutes. We've recovered hundreds of stuck guests over the years. Bogging once is part of the experience. Bogging the same way twice is the part we help you avoid.

"Did the self drive Premium with my brother. Convoy lead Khalid briefed us in 10 minutes, then we drove into Lehbab for two hours. Got stuck once, they pulled us out without making me feel like an idiot. Camp BBQ at the end was the cherry on top. AED 60 vs the AED 119 chauffeur option — no contest."

"My fiancée and I rented a Land Cruiser and joined the self drive VIP convoy. The falcon photo at the camp was a surprise we didn't expect — they handled it for us. Convoy was small, six cars, so it felt private. We'll be back for our anniversary."

"Booked the Standard self drive on impulse the day before. WhatsApp confirmation came in 4 minutes, met the convoy at Lehbab right at sunset. My own 4×4, lead vehicle showed the line, two solid hours of driving. AED 35 — best value I've found in Dubai."

"What I liked: the lead driver didn't treat us like beginners even though we were. The radio call-outs were specific — 'soft sand on the right, hold your line.' That coaching is worth the price alone. Premium camp was the bonus after."
