Self-drive Standard, answered

Frequently asked, cleared up.

What's the difference between Self-Drive Standard and the chauffeured Evening Standard?

Same camp, same BBQ buffet, same shows, same dunes, same sunset stop, same henna, same drinks — same full 6-7 hour evening experience. The only difference is transport. With Evening Standard (AED 79), we pick you up from your hotel in a 4×4 SUV and drop you back. With Self-Drive Standard (AED 35), you bring your own 4×4 to our Lehbab convoy meeting point, drive in the convoy, and drive yourself home after. AED 44 cheaper per person — that's the saving from skipping the chauffeured pickup/drop.

Do I need my own 4×4 for Self-Drive Standard?
Yes — a real 4×4 with low-range gearing or proper off-road mode is required. Sedans, crossovers, and "soft" SUVs without low-range will bog within minutes on Lehbab dunes. If you don't own a 4×4, we can recommend rental partners (typically AED 350-600/day for Land Cruisers and Patrols). Message us on WhatsApp for current options.
Do I drive my own 4×4 during the dune bashing?

Yes — that's the whole point of self-drive. A DDV lead vehicle picks the route and pace. You follow within radio range. Stay within 50 metres of the lead. We pull you out if you bog (happens to most first-timers once). The briefing covers everything: dune patterns, hand signals, what to do if you get stuck.

Is the Bedouin camp experience the same as Evening Standard?

Yes — identical. Same Bedouin camp, same BBQ buffet, same 3 live shows (Tanoura, belly dance, fire show), same henna, same camel ride, same unlimited drinks. Self-drive guests sit alongside chauffeured Evening Standard guests at the camp. The only difference is how you got there and how you go home.

What licence do I need to drive in the Dubai desert?

UAE residents: a valid UAE driving licence. Tourists: an International Driving Permit (IDP) plus your home country licence, or a licence from a country UAE recognises for direct conversion. Bring physical copies to the meeting point — we verify before the convoy moves off. Minimum age: 21.

Does Self-Drive Standard include quad bike or dune buggy?
Quad bike and dune buggy are not included in any of our safari tiers — they're separate add-ons because not every guest wants them. You can add either at booking or on the day, and prices depend on duration and seat count. Message us on WhatsApp for current rates.
Are children charged the same as adults?
Children under 3 are completely free — they ride in a parent's vehicle and don't take a separate camp seat. Children 3 and older are charged the same as adults (AED 35). Standard industry practice — per-camp and per-meal costs are the same regardless of guest size.
What happens if there's a sandstorm or heavy rain?
Heavy weather is rare — sandstorms 2-3 days a year, rain even less. If conditions make dune driving unsafe, we either reschedule at no charge, or run a modified version (skip dune driving, full camp + BBQ + shows experience). Your call. We never operate when it's unsafe.
